The back story

Getting around Marrakech: on foot, by taxi, train and coach

In depth·Marrakech

Marrakech Menara Airport, the petits taxis, the walk through the medina, ONCF trains north and the coaches to the coast: how to move through Marrakech.

The medina is a city for walking: its lanes are too narrow for cars, and the best way between the sights is on foot. Beyond the walls, the Regional Tourism Council lists car, bus, taxi and horse-drawn carriage; for the rest of Morocco there are ONCF trains from Marrakech station and the national coach networks.

Arriving

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is run by ONDA, the national airports authority, a short drive from the medina; its terminals are being extended. Ask your hotel to arrange a transfer, or take a taxi from the rank.

In the city

Walk in the medina; take a petit taxi between the medina, Gueliz and Hivernage; city buses are run by Alsa.

Beyond the city

ONCF trains run north from Marrakech station; book Al Atlas intercity and Al Boraq high-speed tickets on oncf-voyages.ma. CTM and Supratours coaches serve towns across Morocco, including Essaouira.

Agree every taxi fare before you set off, and ask your riad to send someone to meet you at the nearest gate.

Our advice: in the heat of the day, take a taxi between the medina and Majorelle; walk in the early morning and the evening.
